The queen of citrus, Orange is the fruit of the orange tree that can grow up to 12 metres tall. Oranges have ancient European origins and Sicily is one of the best place to grow, where the climate for them is ideal. They can be classified into two macro-categories: table oranges and juicing oranges. Navel is the most famous variety of orange in Sicily, but the Blood Orange is the real jewel in the crown and produces one of the world’s most coveted juices.
There are countless ways to use oranges: the rind is used to create the famous candied fruits and to produce the orange extract used in cosmetics and personal care products. Oranges can be used to make bitter and sweet jams and its sweet and sour pulp – the degree of sweetness and sourness depending on the variety make it a fabulous accompaniment to both sweet and savoury dishes.
The flowering of oranges is a true beauty not only for the elegance of flowers, but also for their intense perfume. The orange flowers, tiny and white, have become the symbol of marriage. They are considered a symbol of prosperity since the story tells that Zeus broght them to Juno as a gift on their wedding day.
