Artifact

An architecture artifact is any structured deliverable—diagram, matrix, catalog, or specification—that captures architecture knowledge for a purpose and audience. Artifacts range from capability maps and data models to standards and roadmaps. Quality artifacts are current, traceable, and linked to decisions and investments.

In Practice

Larkinized LLC defines artifact templates and ownership to prevent repository clutter and stale content. Artifacts should declare viewpoint, freshness, and related terms for discoverability. Not every Zachman cell requires a separate document—prioritize decision-critical outputs.

Example

The architecture repository stores an integration catalog artifact updated quarterly with owner, interface type, and retirement status.
