Made in small batches from organic figs grown in the Mediterranean island of Corsica, Cook’s Pantry fig fruit spread is sweetened with sugar 100% derived from fruit for a taste that is less sweet so you can enjoy the flavor of ripe figs. Pair with a cheese platter, prosciutto, or spread on a crusty bread and make the ultimate gourmet grilled cheese sandwich.
In Ancient Greece, the fig was heavily revered, so much so that Greeks banned their export. They used pressed figs as a substitute for bread, and figs were often used as a sweetener. In 146 BC, during the Third Punic War, the Roman Statesman Cato showed a fresh fig to the Senate, explaining that the threat was near, as the fig was believed to have been “picked three days ago in Carthage.” This evidence prompted the Romans to attack and destroy the city. Figs have been known to be symbolic in many religions, representing peace, prosperity and fertility.
